Fed: Govt dismisses privacy concerns about report cards
CANBERRA, Feb 16 AAP - Private school students would not be able to stop their parentsfrom knowing about their academic progress under new privacy laws, the federal governmentsaid today.
Education Minister Brendan Nelson today dismissed reports that new privacy laws couldallow students to demand their consent before teachers send report cards home.
"To suggest that in some way students would be able to prevent parents from knowingabout their own academic progress, whilst students have always sought to do that, to havethat entrenched in law would simply not meet any standard of common sense," Dr Nelsontold ABC radio.
The new privacy laws, which came into effect in December, could prevent private schoolsfrom disclosing personal information about students without their permission, a reportin The Daily Telegraph said today.
The paper reported that a privacy compliance manual has been issued to all privateschools warning that young people may have increased rights under the Privacy Act andcould use it to stop parents from seeing their report cards.
The new laws affect only private schools because they amend part of the Privacy Act1988 specifically covering the private sector, the paper said.
