US new-home sales fell in Dec., finish dismal 2011
WASHINGTON (AP) — Fewer Americans bought new homes in December, making 2011 the worst sales year on record.
The Commerce Department says new-home sales fell last month to a seasonally adjusted annual pace of 307,000. The pace is less than half the 700,000 that economists say must be sold in a healthy economy.
Total sales last year were less than the 323,000 sold in 2010, making it the …
Resident advisers tried to save shooting victim
In the moments after a shooting at the University of Central Arkansas, two resident advisers worked in vain to revive one of the two fatally wounded students as he gasped for air in a dormitory hallway.
"I was trying to call 911, but I was shaking too bad so I couldn't," said T.J. Frix, a freshman who saw the rescue attempt. He said the resident advisers "both handled it really well. They stepped into action while everyone else" panicked.
Five minutes passed before paramedics made it to the dorm. Two men were bleeding in the hallway; one of them died. A third victim lay dead on the sidewalk outside the dorm.
Police detained four …

Crash diets play dangerous tricks on your metabolism and canresult in the self-defeating "yo-yo syndrome" of repeated weightgains and losses, say health experts at the University of MichiganFitness Research Center. Crash dieting and rapid weight loss signalsthe body to adjust itself to a lower calorie intake. Once the bodyresets itself to the lower metabolic rate, it doesn't immediately popback to a higher rate when normal eating habits are resumed. So if afast is followed by a feast, the body processes the food more slowly, resulting in rapid weight gain. If you the crash diet to reverse thetrend, the syndrome repeats itself. Continued over a …

Armstrong growing up fast
Don't let B.J. "Babyface" Armstrong fool you.
He looks like a kid and even still has a baby tooth. But throughhard work, determination and patience, the 6-2 Iowa graduate israpidly maturing into NBA manhood.
Armstrong took another giant stride Thursday night when he cameoff the bench and had career playoff-high totals of 18 points and agame-high 10 assists in the Bulls' 126-85 rout of the New YorkKnicks. The victory gave the Bulls a 1-0 lead in the best-of-fivefirst-round series.
But Armstrong, reflecting his growing wisdom, said he's notabout to make a career out of Thursday's game.
"It was my best playoff game so far," Armstrong said. "But thatgame is history. We also have to go back out there (tomorrow) andstart all over again, fighting and playing as hard as we can."
Armstrong, a second-year man, backs up veteran point guard JohnPaxson. There are bigger, older and more experienced players on theBulls' bench, but nobody has progressed more than Armstrong.
"He's been our most consistent spark off the bench all year,"Bulls forward Scottie Pippen said. "He penetrates well and does agood job of getting the other guys involved. I like being on thefloor with him because his penetrating and passing helps make my gamebetter."
Pippen said he likes the fact Armstrong has become a"street-type, aggressive player." Armstrong lacked those qualitieslast season.
"He's a loose-limbed player," Bulls coach Phil Jackson said, "aRaggedy Ann-type who looks a little soft on the court. He lacks thatpower run and posture. But in his own quiet and graceful way, hegets things done."
Last season, Philadelphia 76ers bad boy Rick Mahorn knockedArmstrong down with a wicked forearm during the playoffs. Armstrongtook the licking and kept on ticking.
"He keeps getting back up," Jackson said. "He doesn't scareeasy. And you must have that quality to run a team effectively."
Armstrong had a front tooth knocked out during practiceWednesday in a collision with Craig Hodges. He had the toothreinserted and wired and resumed practicing. On Thursday, he wasclotheslined and knocked to the ground by Knicks guard John Starksduring a drive to the basket. He was dazed but got up and made thefree throws.
"Being knocked down is just part of what goes with playingpoint guard," Armstrong said. "But you can't ever let things likethat bother you."
Maria Sharapova back into Wimbledon semifinals
WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — When Maria Sharapova says her game is getting better and better at Wimbledon, it's hard to argue.
The fifth-seeded Russian, the only quarterfinalist at the All England Club with a Grand Slam title to her name, dominated her match on Centre Court on Tuesday, moving back into the semifinals for the first time since 2006.
"I certainly feel like I've improved, especially from my second round," said Sharapova, who beat 24th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova 6-1, 6-1 on another wet day at Wimbledon. "I think that's really important if you want to get to the later stages, later stage of the second week, as well.
"You have to step it up because the matches will only get tougher and you're going to be playing better players that have won the same amount of matches, as well."
Sharapova won the Wimbledon title in 2004 when she was only 17. She made the semifinals the next two years, but hadn't been back this far since.
To reach a second final, she'll have to beat German wild-card entry Sabine Lisicki, who reached her first Grand Slam semifinal by defeating 2007 finalist Marion Bartoli 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-1.
In the other semifinal match, fourth-seeded Victoria Azarenka will face Petra Kvitova.
On Wednesday, the men return to the court with six-time champion Roger Federer up against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, defending champion Rafael Nadal against Mardy Fish, Novak Djokovic facing 18-year-old Australian qualifier Bernard Tomic and Andy Murray versus Feliciano Lopez.
Sharapova lost the opening game of her match under the roof on Centre Court, but then won eight straight and never let Cibulkova hold serve again.
"It's been a few years since I got past the fourth round, and now I'm in the semifinals," said Sharapova, who has not lost a set at this year's tournament. "So this a great chance for me to take it a step further."
Although Azarenka is the highest seeded player remaining in the draw at No. 4, Sharapova is the favorite.
At 24, the Russian is three years older than the other three semifinalists. Plus, Sharapova won the 2006 U.S. Open and the 2008 Australian Open while Lisicki and Azarenka will be playing in a major semifinal for the first time.
"It's great, the fact that I've had the experience of being in those stages. But I haven't been for a while, so it's a nice and refreshing feeling to have," Sharapova said. "I've put a lot of work in to get to this stage, but I still feel like, you know, the tournament's not over. I still have a few more goals left."
The first obstacle will be Lisicki, who was first up under the roof on Centre Court as rain poured down and thunder blared.
Despite wasting three match points in the second set, Lisicki held on to become only the second wild-card entry to reach the women's semifinals at the All England Club and the first German Grand Slam semifinalist since Steffi Graf in 1999.
"I cannot explain how I feel at the moment," said Lisicki, who missed much of the 2010 season following an ankle injury. "It was just such a tough road back and it's so wonderful to be standing on Centre Court in Wimbledon, which I love so much. I'm just so happy."
For Bartoli, the loss was a letdown after eliminating four-time champion Serena Williams in the previous round.
"I still beat Serena Williams in Wimbledon. I think I still can be proud of myself," said Bartoli, who tired after winning the second set. "Even though I lost today, it was still a good match. It was still a good fight."
The rain briefly delayed the start of play Tuesday as the roof was closed, while the opening match on Court 1 started after a 2½-hour delay.
Once it did, Kvitova reached the Wimbledon semifinals for the second year in a row, beating Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-2.
"At the beginning I was better and I played so good like matches before," said the Czech, who had 54 winners to only 10 for Pironkova. "But then I get little nervous, and in my mind was something I don't know what was it. I was mentally down."
Azarenka defeated Tamira Paszek 6-3, 6-1 in a match that started on Court 1 but was moved to Centre Court because of rain after just one game.
In the second game of the second set, Azarenka pulled off a forehand winner on break point that didn't even have to clear the net. Instead, the Belarussian ran down a shot to her right and smacked it outside the post and into the court on the other side.
"It's actually my mom's birthday today so I really wanted to give her a good gift so I was really trying to play beautiful today and that was the first time I did this shot," Azarenka said. "So I'm really glad I could."
Xavier Wins A10 Title; Gains NCAAs
CINCINNATI - The Atlantic 10's best player off the bench grew into a starring role at tournament time. Joei Clyburn had 19 points and 13 rebounds Monday, helping Xavier pull away to a 65-59 victory over Saint Joseph's for the Atlantic 10 tournament championship.
With their top reserve leading the way, the Musketeers (26-7) won their 10th straight game and locked up an NCAA tournament berth. Xavier went 10-of-12 on free throws in the final 65 seconds, and Clyburn - voted the conference's top player off the bench - blocked a 3-point shot on a pivotal play.
"She won two games in the last two days," coach Kevin McGuff said.
Clyburn was Xavier's leading scorer and had the winning free throw in the final seconds of a semifinal victory over defending champion Temple. The fifth-seeded Hawks (19-13) couldn't stop her, either.
Saint Joseph's pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament, beating then-No. 8 George Washington in the semifinals. The Hawks wiped out a 10-point deficit to tie it Monday night, before Clyburn and the Musketeers dug in on defense.
"I felt we let up a little bit," Clyburn said. "When they tied it, we got the thought in our minds that we can't lose this game. We stretched it out at the end."
The third-seeded Musketeers hadn't won the tournament since their back-to-back titles in 2000 - over Saint Joseph's - and 2001.
Xavier's Amber Harris, the A10 freshman of the year, overcame a slow start and finished with 15 points. Brittany Ford scored 20 points for Saint Joseph's, which came up a minute short in its bid to win four games in four days.
"Four is tough," coach Cindy Griffin said. "It's doable. It was right there."
Xavier won it by driving to the basket, forcing fouls and making the free throws. Saint Joseph's was 6-of-7 from the line, while the Musketeers went 22-of-29.
"They play to their strengths," Griffin said. "They play a lot of 1-on-1. Look at the free throws. We got seven and the got 29, and that's basically because they're penetrating all the time."
For the second season in a row, the two schools played for an Atlantic 10 tournament title in Cincinnati.
Last year, the Xavier men won four games in four days at a downtown arena for the A10 championship, drawing energy off its home-crowd advantage to beat the Hawks in the final game.
The women's tournament was played on the Musketeers' on-campus court, providing even more of an advantage. They needed it - their first two wins in the tournament came by one point apiece.
Neither team looked at home in the first half. Xavier led 23-21 at halftime despite shooting 36 percent and piling up 12 turnovers. The Musketeers got more open shots, but repeatedly missed layups and easy putbacks.
Saint Joseph's guard Ayahna Cornish led the Hawks to the title game, averaging 16 points in the tournament. The slashing senior couldn't find any openings, and went 1-of-12 from the field with four points.
Harris, a 6-foot-5 forward who set a school record for blocks, also had a tough time getting shots to fall at the outset. She missed eight of her first nine, and repeatedly pumped her fist in frustration after a layup attempt rolled off the rim late in the first half.
With the game bogged down in mistakes, fans - including the A10 regular season-champion Xavier men's team - did the wave early in the second half.
Xavier finally got into a flow during a 12-2 run that pushed the lead to 35-25, the biggest of the game. Saint Joseph's slowly trimmed it, and Jenna Loschiavo's 3-pointer got it down to 45-43 with 6:47 to play. The lead fluctuated between two and six points until Ford had a putback and Whitney Ffrench made a driving layup that tied it at 55 with 1:31 remaining.
"We kept telling ourselves that we can do it," Cornish said. "We just missed some shots that we made yesterday and the day before, and they made their free throws."
After pulling even, Cornish missed a close-range jumper, Ford had a turnover and Clyburn blocked Oyler's 3-point attempt, forcing Saint Joseph's to foul.
Turkey gears up for growth
Auto components and systems suppliers from Turkey and several other countries will be on show In Istanbul between October 30 and November 2 at the 14th annual Otomotlv expo.
The organizers, Istanbul Trade Fairs (ITF), are confident that it will be bigger than Otomotiv 2007 which had nearly 540 exhibitors from 14 countries and 35 000 visitors. This year, they are gearing up for 45 000 visitors.
Turkey's GDP growth has remained at a healthy 5% for the past two decades. Parts exports are growing, with the focus on replacement components. In 2006, exports earned US$4.6 billion. The main markets are Germany, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Poland, Belgium, the USA, Spain, Romania, Russian Federation and Iran.
Turkey is also the European Union's largest bus and coach manufacturer and its third largest light commercial vehicle and truck manufacturer turning out 1.2 million vehicles a year. The target by government and industry is two million vehicles by 2015.
ITF is a joint venture of CNR Holding and the ITE Group. ITF's international visitor department has representatives in 28 countries to identify and bring buyers to the show. Automotive Industries (Al) caught up with Ceyda Erem, president of CNR & ITF Group of companies and asked her what new products would be new at OTOMOTIV 2008 .
Erem: We're getting support from the Chambers of Commerce in every Turkish city that has an automotive sector. This will help attract more exhibitors and visitors.
Al: How would you rate the success of OTOMOTIV 2007?
Erem: International interest has increased at a remarkable rate, with international visitors and exhibitors making up about 25% of the total.
Al: What do you expect for OTOMOTIV 2008?
Erem: Thanks to local economic growth, we expect to grow. This year, the exhibition will host more than 200 international stands from Germany, Italy, France, Austria, the UK, the Netherlands, China, Taiwan, Korea, India, Iran, and Thailand. The number of international exhibitors increases each year. Turkey is becoming a focal point in the international arena and our show is becoming more and more important in promoting Turkey. These shows are the best medium to establish trade partnerships.
Al: Has the global recessionary trend affected Turkey's auto sector and if so, how?
The sector is benefiting. Having a competitive structure and the capability to manufacture quality and durable products using the latest technologies at reasonable prices, Turkey is in a strong position to become a major manufacturing base and market.
Al: What are the strengths of Turkey's automotive industry and what are some of the challenges it faces?
Erem: Turkey has the most developed automotive industry in the region which offers a unique export and production base, with close bilateral relations with the EU, the G8, and Eurasia. It also has experience with exports and easy access to potential emerging markets.
In terms of human resources, Turkey has highly-skilled human resources both in production and management and sustainable and improvable competitive workforce with low labor cost and culture of productivity. Since the 1990's, we have accumulated technological know-how, investment in R&D has grown rapidly, quality management systems have become world-class, and widespread distribution and marketing networks integrate Turkey with the world automotive industry.
But on the other side we also have some challenges ahead. These include inadequate investments in the sector, the high cost of raw materials due to capacity utilization and production below economies of scale. But Turkey will certainly reach all of its goals regarding the automotive industry in the next few decades and strengthen its role as the most important manufacturer in the region.
"We're getting support from the Chambers of Commerce in every Turkish city that has an automotive sector."
Ceyda Erem, President of CNR & ITF Group of companies.
Hamilton, Rangers extend streaks in 6-3 win
Josh Hamilton extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a home run and a double, Julio Borbon hit a three-run homer and the Texas Rangers stretched the majors' longest winning streak to nine with a 6-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.
Michael Young also homered in his first home game since becoming the franchise's career hits leader last week at Florida during the Rangers' eight consecutive victories on the road.
Hamilton doubled in the fifth, when he scored on Borbon's second homer of the season that made it 4-2. An inning later, Hamilton homered onto the grassy hill in center for his 17th of the season and majors-best eighth in June.
Tommy Hunter (3-0) struck out six without a walk in six innings. He threw 68 of his 88 pitches for strikes while allowing three runs (two earned) and nine hits.
Rookie Neftali Feliz worked the ninth for his 20th save in 22 chances after Darren Oliver worked two perfect innings.
Ross Ohlendorf (0-6) is winless his past 15 starts, 10 this season, since a victory on Aug. 18 against Milwaukee.
Ohlendorf retired the first 10 Rangers batters before Young's one-out homer in the fourth. The last 10 hitters the Pirates' right-hander faced, including Young and Borbon, went 5-for-8 with two walks for four runs.
Borbon is hitting .429 (27 for 63) over his past 18 games, raising his average from .233 to a season-high .294. And that still isn't as good as Hamilton.
Hamilton has hit .485 (33 for 68) during his career-best hitting streak, which is the longest active in the majors, and is at .339 for the season. The slugging outfielder this week moved up to third in the AL All-Star fan voting, ahead of teammate Nelson Cruz, who slipped to fourth.
The Pirates, who had won two in a row since a 12-game losing streak, led 2-0. Pittsburgh has now lost 12 straight road games.
Neil Walker had a one-out double in the first and scored on a single by Garrett Jones, who has an NL-best 12-game hitting streak. Pedro Alvarez had a leadoff single in the fourth and scored on a throwing error.
Pittsburgh got within 4-3 in the sixth after consecutive doubles by Lastings Milledge and Bobby Crosby, the bottom two hitters in the lineup, after having a runner thrown out at the plate.
Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit tried to score on Milledge's double, which Hamilton fielded in the left-field corner. Shortstop Elvis Andrus' relay throw was a strike to Matt Treanor, who put his head down and absorbed the collision at the plate for the out.
In his first game back from the disabled list, Cruz was 0 for 3 with a sacrifice fly that gave him 35 RBIs in 35 games this season. It was the second DL stint this season for the right fielder, the latest for a strained left hamstring after missing time earlier because of a sore right hamstring.
NOTES: When the Rangers took the field, a huge banner was unfurled congratulating Young as the team's career hits leader. He now has 1,752. ... Pittsburgh is 0-4 at Rangers Ballpark. The Pirates were swept in a rain-plagued three-game series in 2004. ... Ohlendorf has limited opposing hitters to a .202 average the first time through the lineup. That goes up to .343 after that.
Tumilty makes name for self Naperville C. catcher living up to family legacy
As the baby in a tough and competitive family, Pat Tumilty wasfaced with two options.
Tough it out or, well, be a baby.
I was always roughed up by my brothers,'' said Tumilty, a seniorcatcher at Naperville Central. I had no choice but to be tough. Mybrothers would beat the living [bleep] out of me."
Little brothers everywhere can relate, but this one was honed forathletic success.
Tumilty's sister, Beth, played soccer at Michigan State and is adoctor.
His brother Scott was a football star at Naperville Central andwas named Division III Athlete of the Year at Augustana in 1996. Heis the track coach at Maine South.
His brother Jim set a new standard for grit by leading NapervilleCentral to the Class 6A championship game in 1995 despite playingwith a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.
My brothers put my name out there in the city of Naperville,'' Patsaid.
Tumilty is living up to the high standards. A high-scoring leftwing in hockey, he played in the Blackhawk Cup final as a freshmanand is a key player on the Chicago Young Americans club team. Hockeyconflicts cut his ties to the Redhawks' football program, but he hasbuilt a reputation in baseball, starting at third base as a sophomoreand making the Illinois Baseball Coaches Association's all-state teamas a junior.
He entered this season as Naperville Central's all-time leader inhome runs with 18, then started 7-for-13 with two homers. The No. 8Redhawks beat No. 1 Lyons 3-2 last week.
Like his brothers, Pat loves to compete,'' Naperville Centralcoach Bill Seiple said. If I were to compare him to a professionalbaseball player, it would be Pete Rose. Pat's actions aren't silky-smooth, but he is relentless and will do anything he can to beatyou."
Seiple said the 6-foot, 185-pound Tumilty, whose 4.2-second speedfrom the plate to first base is the second-fastest on the team, iscapable of playing any position except pitcher. And he can hit.
I've never had trouble hitting and hitting home runs for as longas I can remember," Tumilty said. When I was 12, my brother Jim [then18] would throw to me on a Little League mound [from 46 feet], and hecouldn't throw three past me."
Seems the mental toughness was well on its way to being shapedback then. As 12-year-olds, Tumilty and Naper-ville Central teammatesCraig Brookes, Ryan Pollard, Ryan Renn, Blake Jeffers and Ryan Lindwere on their way to becoming Little League state champions.
Physically, Tumilty was on his way, too. Last month, the Redhawks'trainer was looking at Tumilty's shoulder and discovered what hethinks is a broken collarbone suffered in a hockey game last fall.
He didn't want to miss any games," Seiple said, so he played withit broken."
Tumilty now has a bump--to complement a few others handed downfrom his brothers--where it healed itself.
He is one of the toughest, if not the toughest, kids I've everhad," Seiple said. He's special."
Wash. case raises alcoholic energy drink concerns
ELLENSBURG, Wash. (AP) — Sugary, high-alcohol energy drinks that are popular with college students who want to get drunk quickly and cheaply came under renewed scrutiny Monday as investigators announced that nine freshmen had been hospitalized after drinking them at an off-campus party.
Several states are considering outlawing the drinks and at least two universities have banned them from campus while the Food and Drug Administration reviews their safety.
Washington state Attorney General Rob McKenna called for the drinks to be banned and sent a letter to the FDA on Monday, saying the drinks "present a serious threat to public health and safety."
The issue received new attention after the Oct. 8 party in Roslyn, a picturesque mountain town known as the place where part of the 1990s television series "Northern Exposure" was filmed.
Police first responded to a report of an unconscious female in a grocery store parking lot and learned about the party from her friends. At the home, officers found a chaotic scene, with students from nearby Central Washington University passed out and so intoxicated that investigators thought they had overdosed on drugs.
Nine students who drank a caffeinated malt liquor called Four Loko were hospitalized with blood-alcohol levels ranging from 0.12 percent to 0.35 percent, and a female student nearly died, CWU President James L. Gaudino said. A blood-alcohol concentration of 0.30 percent is considered potentially lethal.
All the hospitalized students were inexperienced drinkers — freshmen ranging in age from 17 to 19. Toxicology results showed no drugs in their bloodstreams, though a small amount of marijuana was reported at the party, university police Chief Steve Rittereiser said.
Some students admitted drinking vodka, rum and beer with Four Loko, which is made by Phusion Projects Inc., of Chicago.
Phusion said in a statement that people have consumed caffeine and alcohol together safely for years. The company said it markets its products responsibly to those of legal drinking age and shares with college administrators the goal of making campuses safe and healthy environments.
"The unacceptable incident at Central Washington University, which appears to have involved hard liquor, such as vodka and rum, beer, our products, and possibly illicit substances, is precisely why we go to great lengths to ensure our products are not sold to underage consumers and are not abused," the statement said.
The FDA sent a warning letter to Phusion Products in November 2009 asking the company for information that shows adding caffeine to alcoholic beverages is safe, and the case remains open, the agency said in a statement Monday.
Four Loko comes in several varieties, including fruit punch and blue raspberry. A 23.5-ounce can sells for about $2.50 and has an alcohol content of 12 percent, comparable to four beers, according to the company's website.
Health advocates say the caffeine in the drink can also suspend the effects of alcohol consumption, allowing a person to consume more than usual.
"It gets you really drunk really fast and it gives you a lot of energy so you're not going to be laying down and sleeping," said 18-year-old CWU freshman Hyatt Van Cotthem of Everett, Wash., who said he's tried the beverage but doesn't drink it because the taste is "nasty." He didn't attend the party.
Regulating such drinks would be a good idea, Cotthem said, because he's seen so many students do dumb things when drinking it. But he and a friend also questioned that the drink alone could have wreaked so much havoc.
"There's no way that Four Loko caused all these people to just pass out," he said.
The nine sickened students have recovered and returned to their classes. No criminal charges have been filed, but Rittereiser said the investigation into the source of the alcohol continues.
Gaudino banned alcoholic energy drinks from CWU's campus Monday, following the president of New Jersey's Ramapo College, who banned the drinks last month after attributing several students' hospitalizations to Four Loko.
"It's not that we'd seen a lot of consumption, but we'd seen enough that it worried us, because it was in situations of extreme intoxication," Ramapo President Peter Mercer said Monday. "Having seen no redeeming social use for it, and seeing the damage and danger it could pose, I ordered a ban."
Mercer said he eagerly awaits the results of the FDA review and supports a measure to ban the drinks in New Jersey.
Utah and Montana have restricted the sale of the caffeinated malt liquors to just state liquor stores. A bill to ban the drinks in Washington state failed in the Legislature earlier this year, but McKenna and Gov. Chris Gregoire said they would support another effort.
McKenna also said his office would review the marketing of such drinks, particularly to minors, to determine if consumer protection laws have been violated. The state previously raised concerns with the nation's two largest brewers, MillerCoors LLC and Anheuser-Busch InBev NV, about similar drinks.
"We never brought a lawsuit against them because they acted like good corporate citizens and removed the products," McKenna said.
Steven Schmidt, a spokesman for the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association, said many states feel they need to act quickly on the issue because the drinks are increasing in popularity.
"There's really a sense that people consuming these drinks don't understand how much alcohol they are drinking," he said. "These products pack a punch, and they are relatively inexpensive."

WINE SIPPER
WINES ON A BUDGET
I've got some bad news for you. If they haven't already, those Christmas credit card bills should be starting to roll in about now. If you're like most Americans, you overspent your budget by a hefty margin. While some might call that blatant excess, I prefer to think of it as a sign of our latent generosity-after all, it was about giving. No matter what the motive, all those payments require a tightening of the belt. Time to look to the cheap shelf for our daily wine fix. With the worldwide grape glut, you can find a nice variety of bottles at bargain prices. Lots of inexpensive Cabernet, Merlot and Chardonnay, but too many are a bit bland and boring. Still, you don't have to sacrifice character when you buy an inexpensive wine. Here are two whites and two reds that deliver a lot of bang for the buck, all priced for just $6.99.
2005 Quinta Hinojal White
A blend of Viura and Verdejo from the Castilla y Leon region of Spain that delivers beautiful floral white peach aromas. It's bright and racy in the mouth with rich stone and tropical fruit flavors that burst on the palate. This is one of my all-time favorite white wines, one I was going to pick for my top four of the year, but the distributor was waiting on a shipment so there was none to be had in Boise. It's back in stock with a beautiful new label, and while the price went up a bit, it is still an exceptional bargain.
2005 Twin Fin Pinot Grigio
California white at its budget best, bursting with creamy honey dew and pineapple aromas. The flavors are anything but bland with gooseberry and mango up front, lovely lemon custard in the middle and a nice hit of orange zest along with herbs and minerals on the finish. And speaking of labels, this one is a cool homage to the laid-back California lifestyle.
2004 Round Hill Cabernet Sauvignon
Dark fruit, a light touch of licorice and sweet oak greet you on the nose. A surprisingly rich and full flavored wine with just enough toasty oak to satisfy most California Cab lovers. What wins me over is the supple textures and the dense fruit flavors highlighted by deep berry, cherry and plum along with nice hints of mocha on the long smooth finish. I haven't found a better Cabernet at the price and few that can touch it for twice the tariff.
2004 Tinto Lena
Talk about bargains, the folks in Castilla y Leon must be on to something, scoring with a top white and this lovely little red. A 50/50 blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha, it is soft but far from simple with a floral bouquet that hints at dark chocolate and spicy red fruits. Offers flavors of sweet cherry and raspberry in the mouth, the tannins are very light and are backed by a subdued spice component on the finish. An eminently quaffable crowd-pleaser that comes in an oversized one-liter bottle.
Rice to press North Korean envoy on nukes
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice hopes to judge North Korea's seriousness about abandoning nuclear weapons when she holds the Bush administration's highest-level talks in four years with the Stalinist state this week.
The North has been given a four-page draft document laying out what the United States wants from it to prove it has told the truth about its past atomic programs. Rice expects Pyongyang's foreign minister to provide at least an initial response to the proposal at Wednesday's meeting.
"It will give some indication of the amount of effort the North Koreans have put into the completing this verification protocol," chief U.S. negotiator Christopher Hill said Tuesday.
The draft calls for intrusive inspections of North Korean nuclear facilities, soil sampling and interviews with key scientists. It was presented to the North Koreans earlier this month by Hill and representatives of the other four nations pushing the denuclearization effort.
Hill said the goal is to reach a formal agreement on the document by mid-August after negotiations on the fine points, some of which the North Koreans have already objected to.
"They made some preliminary comments and indicated some problems with it," he told reporters accompanying Rice to an Asian security forum in Singapore where she will see North Korean Foreign Minister Pak Ui Chun and their counterparts from China, Japan, South Korea and Russia.
After talks with Hill on Tuesday, South Korea's main nuclear envoy Kim Sook said: "The ball is actually in the North Korean court because they already received the draft of the verification protocol."
If Pyongyang agrees to the proposal, it would lead to the start of a key process of checking if the North turned in a correct account of its nuclear activity and facilities last month in a step toward their dismantlement.
Verification is expected to take months to finish and the Bush administration is eager to make quick progress in its last six months in office.
Officials, including Rice, who will be meeting a North Korean foreign minister for the first time, have played down chances of any breakthrough at Wednesday's meeting, which has been organized by China as an informal session.
But Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said, though, that he thought the gathering "will be very good for advancing the agenda of the talks."
Rice herself said she would deliver "a very strong message" that the process "really needs to be completed, and that it has to be a verification protocol that can give us confidence."
Although Rice refused to describe the meeting as an historic or landmark event, it will be the Bush administration's highest-level contact since 2004 with North Korea, a charter member of the president's "axis of evil."
It comes amid positive developments in the six-nation effort to get the North to denuclearize. The campaign began in 2003, but then stalled and gained steam only after Pyongyang detonated an atomic device in 2006.
In June, North Korea submitted a long-delayed list of its nuclear programs involving plutonium, but it did not include details about nuclear weapons, an alleged uranium enrichment program and possible nuclear proliferation with country's such as Syria.
Rice made clear that those concerns still have to be addressed if progress is to continue. "We (need) a way to address proliferation as well as all nuclear programs, including highly enriched uranium," she said.
Still in return for its steps, Washington announced it would remove the North from its terrorism blacklist and relaxed some economic sanctions on the communist nation. That led Pyongyang to blow up the cooling tower at its main nuclear reactor.

Group: Nigeria lead poisoning victims need care
LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — An aid agency says that victims of a lead poisoning epidemic that killed at least 400 people in Nigeria's northwest are in need of long-term care.
The U.K.-based office of Doctors Without Borders said that the work it has been doing to treat the victims was only "a beginning" as it accepted the U.N.-backed Green Star Award for leadership in environmental emergencies Wednesday in Bern, Switzerland.
Emergency Manager Lauren Cooney called for new partners to get involved.
Doctors Without Borders treated more than 1,000 residents of Zamfara state since March 2010 in collaboration with other groups.
The epidemic is caused by the processing of gold ore in residential compounds, where people are exposed to toxic levels of lead found in the ore.
Pagan a homer shy of cycle, Mets rout Tigers 14-6
Angel Pagan finished a homer shy of the cycle and had four RBIs, David Wright reached base five times and scored three runs, and the New York Mets routed the Detroit Tigers 14-6 on a rainy Tuesday night.
Ike Davis had two hits and two RBIs in the third inning as the Mets batted around for seven runs, getting help from Jay Sborz, who became the first pitcher in eight years to hit the first two batters in his big league debut.
Sborz was pitching in relief of Justin Verlander (8-5), who did not return to the mound after a 58-minute rain delay that began after he allowed an RBI double to Jason Bay in the third inning that gave New York a 3-0 lead.
The Mets returned home from a 7-2 road trip, having lost the final two games of a three-game set with the crosstown rival Yankees, to face the Tigers in New York for the first time since 2004.
The Tigers gave the Mets plenty of help in this matchup of teams that each entered 9-3 in interleague play. Detroit walked seven _ one intentionally _ hit two batters with pitches and allowed Jose Reyes to reach on a third strike that went to the backstop for a wild pitch.
Pagan, subbing in center field all season for injured Carlos Beltran, tied a career high with four hits _ hours after learning that Beltran will begin a rehab assignment Thursday at Class-A St. Lucie.
Beltran is recovering from offseason knee surgery. He could return to the Mets sometime around the All-Star break, which likely would cut into playing time for Pagan and right fielder Jeff Francoeur.
Wright had two singles, an RBI double, a sacrifice fly and two walks _ one intentional. Reyes scored three runs and had three hits, and every position player except Rod Barajas drove in a run as the Mets set a season best for runs.
Jonathan Niese did not allow a hit for the first three innings but sat 90 minutes between pitches thanks to the rain delay and struggled in the fourth, giving up a two-run homer to Brennan Boesch that went over the 415-foot sign in right-center.
Niese labored in the fifth, too. Mets manager Jerry Manuel gave the left-hander every chance to earn his fourth straight win, but lifted him once he walked Brandon Inge to load the bases with two outs.
Fernando Nieve (2-3) gave up an RBI single to Boesch in 2 1-3 innings and struck out four in a row.
In the third, Davis singled before the rain arrived, then greeted reliever Brad Thomas with a two-run double in the inning that started at 8:06 p.m and ended at 9:34 p.m.
After the tarp was removed, Sborz, called up from Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, hit Barajas with a pitch to load the bases and then plunked Francoeur to force in a run.
Sborz's big league debut was over about as quickly as it started. He got just two outs, one on a diving stop by Inge, who tagged third base with his glove for a forceout, and a strikeout when Niese bunted foul for strike three. Sborz gave up five runs while getting just two outs.
Justin Miller of the Toronto Blue Jays was the last pitcher to hit the first two batters in his big league debut. He did it on April 12, 2002, against Tampa Bay, according to STATS LLC.
After being lifted, Sborz shook his head in the dugout. Verlander, who also allowed five runs, came over for a word.
Austin Jackson made his first start since hurting his back a week ago. He had an RBI double in the Tigers' four-run fifth.
NOTES: Pagan singled and grounded out in his two chances to get the cycle. ... Sborz replaced struggling starter Rick Porcello, optioned to Toledo before Sunday's game. After going 14-9 as a 20-year-old rookie, Porcello is 4-7 with a 6.14 ERA this season. ... The Mets recalled RHP Bobby Parnell from Triple-A Buffalo. He pitched a scoreless inning.
Washburn Stifles Yanks With 8 Scoreless
SEATTLE - Jarrod Washburn had an emphatic answer to last weekend's dustup against the Yankees: eight scoreless innings against New York. Washburn allowed six hits and struck out a season-high six and Kenji Johjima hit a two-run home run to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 3-0 victory over the Yankees on Friday night.
It was the first time in 10 starts against New York that Washburn has held the Yankees scoreless.
In his previous start, Washburn hit Josh Phelps in the back with a pitch, after Phelps bowled over catcher Johjima at home plate. When Yankees reliever Scott Proctor retaliated later in the game, he and manager Joe Torre were ejected and eventually suspended.
Friday night, Washburn (3-3) silenced the Yankees bats in the first game of their nine-game road trip, retiring his final eight batters. The final one was Hideki Matsui, who flailed at a pitch in the dirt. Washburn pumped both arms and let out a primal scream as he walked off the mound to a standing ovation from a near-sellout crowd of 44,214.
J.J. Putz got three outs for his eighth save in eight chances.
Washburn was toughest each time the Yankees threatened to score. With Johnny Damon on second and one out in the first inning, Washburn retired Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez on ground outs. With two on and one out in the second, the fast-working lefty struck out Robinson Cano on a slow curveball and Melky Cabrera on a fastball. Washburn slapped his glove and shouted to punctuate that escape.
After Jeter walked and Rodriguez reached on a hard shot that glanced off third baseman Adrian Beltre's glove for a hit with two outs in the third, all Matsui could do against Washburn was foul out.
And after Phelps reached second base after a fielder's choice in the fourth, Washburn got Cabrera to ground out. Washburn yelled and pumped his fist at that, too.
Rasner (1-2) fell behind on Raul Ibanez's RBI single in the third. After he walked Beltre to begin the fourth, Johjima lined a 90 mph fastball on a 2-1 count into the first row of bleachers beyond left field. His fourth home run put Seattle up 3-0.
Rasner left after five innings having allowed three runs and seven hits. He struck out one and walked three.
Proctor, suspended for four games pending an appeal for throwing behind Yuniesky Betancourt on Sunday, relieved. The first man Proctor faced was Betancourt.
This time, no sparks. Proctor's first pitch was outside, and Betancourt popped out on the second pitch.
Notes: Sunday in New York, Washburn gave up three runs in 5 1-3 innings and lost. ... Seattle OF Ichiro Suzuki had his third and fourth stolen bases of the season, off Rasner and C Jorge Posada. Suzuki has been successful on an AL-record 43 consecutive attempts. The major league record is 50 by Vince Coleman from 1988-89. Rasner had not allowed a stolen base in his first 47 1-3 innings in the major leagues. ... Yankees DH Jason Giambi was a late scratch, missing his third consecutive start because of a spur near his left heel. Torre is hoping his slugger will play Saturday.

McDonalds pulls ad after pit bull owner outrage
LOS ANGELES (AP) — McDonald's has apologized and pulled an ad that said eating a Chicken McBite was less risky than petting a stray pit bull, shaving your head, naming your son Sue or giving friends your Facebook password. It enraged pit bull owners and their supporters.
The radio ad for Chicken McBites only ran for a few days in the Kansas City area before the complaints started. The campaign against the ad circulated on social media sites, and the apology was delivered the same way. People who called a well-publicized toll-free number got a recorded apology.
"The ad was insensitive in its mention of pit bulls. We apologize. As soon as we learned of it, we tracked the source and had the local markets pull the ad immediately. We'll do a better job next time. It's never our intent to offend anyone with how we communicate news about McDonald's," Ashlee Yingling, spokesman for McDonald's Corp., said Monday, quoting from the apology.
"I found it extremely offensive and reckless," said Rachele Lizarraga of Sacramento. "Why would you try to promote the safety of food?"
Lizarraga, who owns a pet-sitting business and is social media coordinator for Chako Pit Bull Rescue, started a Facebook page called "Pit Bulls Against McDonald's," launched an online petition calling for an end to the ad and started one of many Twitter threads.
Many of the 8,200-plus people who liked the Facebook page said an apology wasn't enough — they wanted a donation to some pit bull organizations and a McDonald's ad featuring a pit bull.
Others thought the apology was enough.
"We are just asking them to promote positive pit bull imagery. We are not asking for donations. I don't think that should be a demand," Lizarraga said.
"It was stupid marketing, playing into the media hysteria about pit bulls," she added.
"The McDonald's response was immediate, unambiguous and apologetic — not sure what more anyone could ask. I'll soon be ordering those McBites, and likely lovin' it," radio host and syndicated pet columnist Steve Dale wrote Sunday.
The campaign against the ad built swiftly and fiercely Friday. Then the ad disappeared, except on YouTube and online.
It was not a national radio ad, Yingling said. "Working with the local market, we took immediate action to pull the ad and apologized for the mistake," she said.
She did not say if McDonald's would be making any pit bull rescue donations or making an ad with a pit bull.
"I am pleased that they pulled the ad after their customers spoke out about it. Not all companies listen so closely to their customers so I appreciate that they did — and so quickly," said Stephanie Filer, communications manager for the Animal Rescue League of Iowa and a member of ARL Pit Crew Club.
She posted an illustration, showing a box of McDonald's Chicken McNuggets and a pit bull laying on its back with the caption "Which is safer? Eating this? Petting this?"
She also posted a photo of herself and her pit bull named Freedom with a word bubble describing the ad. It read: "Hey McDonalds — I created an ad on Facebook that went viral today, on behalf of the ARL Pit Crew Club because my pit bull was a STRAY."

Campaign Accelerates for Follow-on Biologics
Advanced product characterization methods may pave the way for biosimilar therapies
The ability of modern analytical techniques to ensure that generic or followon versions of biotech therapies are comparable to the innovator product is emerging as a key issue for shaping a legal pathway to bring these products to market. Generic drug makers, as well as some biotech firms, want Congress to authorize the US Food and Drug Administration to approve similar biologies based on an abbreviated application that draws on test data developed by the innovator firm. The Hatch-Waxman Act established such a process for conventional drugs in 1984, but it does not apply to biologies regulated by …
